I know a guy who’s selling his 2007 V70 R. Automatic transmission, 8x,xxx miles, dealer maintained, clean VIN, $9,500. The interior has some wear and tear due to kids, but he says it runs strong. Unfortunately, they live in Virginia, so I can’t just pop over and drive it. I’m contemplating trying it out and if I like it, drive it home after our upcoming family vacation to DC next month. Nothing like a 16-hour solo road trip to bond with a car.

So yeah, I’m interested. I know very little about the R lineup, especially the second generation, but I like what I’m reading. It sounds like it could be a solid swap for my CRV. Big, fast, comfortable family hauler with some cool dad cachet. What’s not to dig? And even if this car is a bust I’m still interested in another V70 R orS60 R.

However, I need to know about day to day reliability, especially potentially big issues like turbo problems, Haldex issues, electronics. I’m not averse to fixing up some of the issues like the messed up door cards and even some of the upholstery. I don’t want to be rebuilding an engine within the next 20,000 miles though.

Insight?

“day to day reliability”

Something that has never been uttered about any Volvo R except in reference to a lack-thereof.

ETA: A Volvo R might make your GTV6 look like a Honda in comparison.

Friend has had one for a few years now with no problems and IIRC he’s at 120k miles. Only thing is he is always worried about the suspension going bad, because its expensive to replace, and feels bad driving it in Chicago.

But the car is great though. Fast, fun, sounds good, fits everything and he even has the spaceball manual.

What specifically? And is the more common V70 T5 any more or less reliable?

Honestly, if you aren’t driving it a lot, I’ve found them to be more reliable than most people give them credit for. If you haven’t driven a V70R - be warned, it has the turning radius of a semi truck. Other than that, and it not fitting in my garage, I totally would have kept it around longer.

Well, when you need to replace any/all of the shocks/struts - new units are $400 each if you replace with the Volvo Four-C components (electronically controlled and adjusted).

Timing belt and water pump should absolutely be replaced by 100k - parts alone were about $500.

Head gasket and PCV system and head gasket should get replaced around 100-120k. Those parts were just over $500 if I recall correctly.

Here’s a good buying guide from our own JQJ213. By “buying guide” I mean “chronicle of his descent into Volvo R hell”. It seems like the age of these vehicles and the cost and complexity of repairing them is not for the faint of heart.

This is probably why he’s replacing it. If the parts are $1,000 I can only imagine the labor will be three times that. Unless he’s done the maintenance and is still selling, which I find unlikely.

My neighbor just got a 535i wagon with 80k miles for about $10,000. He loves it.

Kick me in the head, but I’m also looking at b5.5 Passat wagons...

Well, to be fair the one I’m looking at is a generation newer...

You have impeccable taste! I know of a beautiful 1993 Range Rover County LWB that needs some suspension work if you’re interested ;)
